Maharashtra Beauty Cream Ban Sparks Concerns Over Unregulated Ingredients
Maharashtra FDA Orders Ban and Recall of Skin Lightening Creams Containing Mercury and Lead
The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has banned the sale, distribution, and use of three skin lightening creams after laboratory tests found mercury and lead levels far above permissible limits. The three products, Pakistan-made Goree Beauty Cream, Face Fresh Gold, and Golden Star Beauty Cream, were found to be "Not of Standard Quality", and the FDA ordered their immediate removal from the market.
The action follows growing concern over the health effects of unregulated skin whitening products. According to the FDA, laboratory analysis detected excessive amounts of mercury and lead in the creams. The regulator has directed retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and e-commerce platforms to immediately stop selling or stocking the products and submit details of recalled stock.
The banned creams were still available on some online marketplaces, including Meesho, despite the ban. Health experts warn that mercury is sometimes illegally added to skin lightening creams because it suppresses melanin production, making the skin appear lighter within days. However, the effect comes at a heavy cost.
