Humans and Humanoid Robots: Exploring the Possibility of Emotional Connection
UBTech Unveils Lifelike Humanoid Robot for Companionship
Chinese robotics company UBTech has unveiled its new U1 humanoid robot, claiming it is the world's first full-size ultra-bionic humanoid designed for mass production. The AI-powered machine is fueling excitement while also raising fresh questions about privacy and emotional dependence. Even before deliveries begin, the company says it has received more than 13,300 pre-orders, highlighting growing demand for AI-powered companion robots in China.
The U1 series was introduced at a launch event in Shenzhen on June 30 under UBTech's new consumer brand, UWorld. The lineup includes three versions, with prices starting at 119,800 yuan, or about ₹17 lakh, and reaching nearly 990,000 yuan for the top-end model. Deliveries are expected to begin in September. Unlike industrial robots built for factories, the U1 is designed as a personal companion.
The U1 features silicone skin, expressive facial movements, cameras, microphones, and sensors that allow it to recognize more than 20 emotional states. UBTech says the robot can respond with comforting conversation, remember users over time, remind them to take medication, and even suggest activities such as watching sports together. The company says its main target customers are people living alone and older adults, groups it believes could benefit from AI companionship.
