Bengaluru's Decline: Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw's Stark Warning on City's Waste Management Crisis
Bengaluru's Rapid Urbanisation Sparks Debate Over Long-Term Planning Priorities
A social media post by Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw has sparked conversations about Bengaluru's rapid urbanisation, shrinking green cover, and the city's long-term planning priorities. The discussion began after Mazumdar-Shaw shared a graphic on X comparing Bengaluru's existing road infrastructure with an alternative vision that prioritised greenery, walkability, and public spaces.
The graphic juxtaposed two versions of the same elevated road corridor. The first, labelled as the existing model, depicted a corridor dominated by flyovers and concrete, with claims that trees had been removed and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure lost in the process. In contrast, the alternative design imagined a greener streetscape where trees were retained and integrated into the road network. The concept also featured wider footpaths, dedicated cycling lanes, street lighting, benches, public bins, and other amenities aimed at making the area more accessible and livable.
