Resume Red Flags: Former Google Recruiter Reveals Hidden Mistakes Job Seekers Make
A former recruiter at Google, TikTok, Uber, and The New York Times has identified a common and often "completely invisible" resume red flag that can hurt job seekers' chances of landing interviews. Farah Sharghi, who has extensive experience in recruitment, notes that recruiters typically spend only a few seconds scanning a resume, making clarity and context critical.
The biggest resume mistake Sharghi sees is writing a resume for people who already know the candidate's story instead of for strangers evaluating their application. This is often achieved through "you had to be there" language, where candidates describe their work using generic statements that lack context. While the applicant may understand the significance of a project, an external recruiter often does not.
To fix this issue, Shargi advises job seekers to add a line of context before their bullets, explaining what an organization does and what their role was within it. This provides clarity and allows someone unfamiliar with the company to understand the impact of their work.
