Mumbai Resident Recalls Monsoon Struggle in Chawl, Battles Flooding with Midnight Efforts
Mumbai Entrepreneur Shares Emotional Recollection of Life in a Flood-Prone Chawl
A Mumbai-based marketing company founder, Shubham Gune, has recently shared a poignant recollection of life in a flood-prone chawl during the monsoon. Gune's childhood experience of dreading the arrival of the monsoon because rainwater routinely entered his family's home is a stark contrast to the popular depictions of Mumbai's monsoon, which often feature scenes of people enjoying the rain on Marine Drive.
For 7 years, Gune hated rains because heavy rainfall often turned nights into a battle against rising water levels inside the house. The flooding usually began around midnight, with water entering the house through windows and doors. The family would then scramble to save their belongings, shifting mattresses, clothes, books, and shoes onto a small table or the top shelf of an almirah before removing water from the house using buckets.
