Bengaluru's ongoing struggle to reclaim pedestrian spaces has taken a new turn, with Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw calling out a Mercedes owner for parking their luxury vehicle on a footpath. The billionaire entrepreneur took to X, sharing a picture of the vehicle parked on a pavement, effectively blocking pedestrian access. Mazumdar-Shaw's post sparked a flood of reactions from residents, many claiming footpath and roadside parking violations remain widespread across the city.
The incident occurred just days after the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) launched its "Safe Footpath" campaign to clear encroachments and restore walkability across the city. Authorities have emphasized that footpaths are meant for pedestrians and should remain free of obstructions. The campaign, which began on July 1, has already cleared encroachments from of footpaths across Bengaluru in three days, targeting obstructions that force pedestrians onto busy roads and pose safety risks.
