Airport Tussle: Bengaluru Tech Worker Alleges Uber Driver Demanded Extra Fee for Excess Luggage
Ride-Hailing Dispute at Bengaluru Airport
A Bengaluru-based senior engineer, Anshul Nema, has alleged that an Uber driver at Kempegowda International Airport demanded an additional Rs 500 in cash for carrying luggage despite an Uber Premier booking. This incident prompted Nema and his family to abandon the ride and book through rival platform Namma Yatri instead.
Nema described the experience as "one of the most disappointing experiences" he had faced with the ride-hailing platform at the airport. He claimed that his family chose Uber Premier for airport pickup, expecting a more comfortable ride suitable for a family with luggage. The fare displayed on the app showed Uber Go at around Rs 1,000 and Uber Premier at around Rs 1,200.
Airport personnel were reportedly encouraging passengers to book Uber XL, stating that wait times for other categories would be longer. However, Nema alleged that the Uber XL fare was around Rs 2,500, making it an expensive option for his family. After waiting about 10 minutes for the Premier cab, Nema claimed that the driver refused to proceed unless he paid an additional Rs 500 for luggage.
