Warren Buffett May Halt Donations to Gates Foundation Following Epstein Revelations

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has indicated that he may not continue his annual multibillion-dollar donations to the Gates Foundation, where he has donated billions of dollars in the past. This decision comes after recent revelations linked Gates Foundation founder Bill Gates to the notorious Jefferey Epstein files, which revealed his connection with the convicted sex offender.

In his first televised interview since stepping down as Berkshire Hathaway's chief executive in January, Buffett told CNBC that he was not ready to commit to continuing his donations to the Gates Foundation. The recent Epstein files revealed the late sex offender's relationship with the nonprofit and its co-founder Bill Gates. Materials released by the US Department of Justice in February showed that Gates and Epstein met repeatedly to discuss philanthropy following Epstein's 2008 guilty plea to Florida prostitution charges.

Buffett stated that he would wait and see what unfolds before making a decision about his donations. He also revealed that he has not talked to Gates "at all since the whole thing was unveiled" and declined to comment further on their relationship. Buffett noted that he had "great times together" with Gates, but until the situation is cleared up, he does not think it makes sense to do a lot of talking.

Buffett's decision not to commit to his donations to the Gates Foundation raises questions about the future of his philanthropic efforts. Since beginning to give away his fortune in 2006, Buffett has donated more than $47 billion of Berkshire's stock to the Gates Foundation. Last year's donation totaled more than $4.5 billion. However, in 2024, Buffett stated that his donations to the Gates Foundation would end when he dies, with 99.5% of his remaining wealth going to a charitable trust overseen by his children.

The Gates Foundation responded to the revelations by stating that Bill Gates "took responsibility for his actions" when the Microsoft co-founder discussed Epstein in a town-hall meeting with employees. A spokesperson said that Gates acknowledged it was a serious error in judgment to meet with Epstein and is committed to answering all questions and demonstrating that he was never a part of Epstein's criminal activity.

Note: The total donations figure may not reflect the exact amount donated by Buffett, as the article mentions that he has donated Berkshire stock to the foundation and four family charities annually.
