United Nations General Assembly President Urges Reforms, Cites India as Vital Global Partner in Promoting Peace
Global Cooperation and Reforms: UN Chief Annalena Baerbock in New Delhi
On April 28, Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly, addressed the pressing need for strengthened global cooperation and renewed commitment to the United Nations Charter in the face of rising geopolitical tensions and growing pressure on the international system. Baerbock emphasized that the multilateral organization must reform to meet the current global challenges, with partnership with India being essential when the UN requires "steadfast commitment and cooperation".
Baerbock spoke at a press briefing at UN House in New Delhi, highlighting the challenges facing multilateralism and international law. She noted that the United Nations, multilateralism, and international law are not only under pressure, but under direct attack, with increasing fragmentation and strain across the pillars of peace and security, development, and human rights.
Baerbock emphasized that no country can address today's interconnected global challenges alone, citing climate change, global health crises such as COVID-19, and the economic impact of conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and disruptions to global trade routes. She stressed that complying with international law and delivering on the Sustainable Development Goals is in the interest of all.

During her visit, Baerbock held bilateral discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, focusing on strengthening cooperation on shared global priorities. Baerbock highlighted India's role, describing the country as an essential partner in advancing multilateral solutions.
India has played a critical role in the UN's 80-year history, with significant contributions to peacekeeping efforts. Since 1948, India has contributed more than 300,000 troops to over 53 missions. More than 184 peacekeepers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of global peace.
India has also been a leader in South-South cooperation, committing $150 million over 10 years to the India-UN Development Partnership Fund to specifically support 'least developed countries'.
