Supreme Court Refers Sona Group Family Trust Inheritance Dispute to Mediation

The Supreme Court of India has referred the inheritance dispute involving the Sona Group family trust to mediation. The decision was made after all parties agreed to explore the possibility of an amicable settlement. The apex court has appointed former Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud to oversee the mediation process.

The dispute between Rani Kapur and Priya Kapur stems from a suit filed by Rani Kapur, who has alleged that her late son Sunjay Kapur and his wife Priya Sachdev Kapur took advantage of her medical condition and trust. According to the suit, Rani Kapur's assets were transferred into the family trust without her informed consent. The legal battle intensified following Sunjay Kapur's death in June last year.

The stocks of Sona BLW were trading in red in Thursday's session, with shares trading at Rs 577, down 0.96 per cent or Rs 5.60. A Bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and JB Pardiwala gave the ruling, urging the parties to resolve the dispute amicably.

The Delhi High Court has already allowed an interim injunction plea filed by Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor's two children, restraining Priya Sachdev Kapur from creating third-party rights over the assets left behind by Sunjay Kapur. Rani Kapur has sought a status quo order on the alienation of all trust properties. The Supreme Court has urged the parties to consider mediation, noting that a prolonged inheritance dispute involving an 80-year-old litigant would not serve any meaningful purpose.
