Son Considers Cutting Parent's Financial Support to Pursue Marriage Goals
Financial Support Debate Ignited Over Reducing Allowance for Mother
A Singaporean man has sparked a heated online debate after asking whether he would be wrong to reduce his mother's monthly allowance in order to focus on his own life plans, including marriage and having children.
The man, who has been supporting his mother financially for almost 20 years, shared his situation on the r/asksg forum on Reddit. According to his post, he has been giving his mother 15% of his salary since entering the workforce. Beyond the monthly contribution, he also covers expenses including her Netflix subscription and medical insurance.
The man's priorities have changed as he looks towards marriage with his long-term partner, a low-income foreign worker who earns under S$2,000 a month. His mother encouraged the couple to have a baby, but tensions escalated when the man explained that parenthood would be difficult to afford unless his financial commitments elsewhere were reduced.
