Powerful 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Philippines, Triggers Global Seismic Activity
Powerful Earthquake Off Philippines Coast Sends Ripples Around the World
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Mindanao in southern Philippines on June 8, sending seismic waves around the globe. Scientists tracked the tremors as they moved through Asia, crossed India, and eventually reached the earthquake's antipode, the point on Earth directly opposite the epicentre. The Princeton University visualisation showed the waves spreading across continents and oceans, underscoring just how much energy the quake released.
The earthquake, centered near Sarangani province and close to General Santos City, was one of the strongest recorded in the Philippines this year. The earthquake caused significant damage in parts of southern Philippines, damaging buildings, roads, and other infrastructure. The quake left a trail of damage across parts of southern Philippines, prompting tsunami warnings and emergency evacuations in coastal areas.
Rescue and relief teams were deployed as authorities assessed the impact and assisted affected communities. Seismologists said the powerful earthquake released vast amounts of energy, generating seismic waves that travelled through the Earth's interior and across its surface, eventually being detected thousands of kilometres from the epicentre. While people thousands of kilometres away do not usually feel such shaking, highly sensitive monitoring stations detect the waves as they pass beneath different regions of the world.
