Blue-Collar Salaries in Metropolitan Cities: A Reality Check

Mumbai: A Reddit post has sparked a heated debate about the salaries of skilled blue-collar workers in metropolitan cities, particularly in Mumbai. The post claims that a plumber in the city earns Rs 18 lakh (approximately $22,500 USD) per year, a figure that initially sounded implausible but was backed up by the plumber's details of steady monthly retainers, per-job payments, and long-term contracts.

According to the post, the plumber's income comes from maintenance work across multiple large residential townships in Mira Road, Borivali, and Kandivali. The plumber reportedly owns a 2023 Hyundai Creta, has built a house in his native village, and purchased farmland, indicating a stable and lucrative income.

The debate surrounding the post highlights the increasing demand for skilled blue-collar workers in metropolitan cities like Mumbai. Commenters argue that workers trained in plumbing, electrical work, and civil maintenance often know their market value and charge a premium or move overseas due to chronic shortages.

India's Labour Shortage

The discussion also touches on India's labour shortage, with many commenters noting that workers are increasingly commanding high incomes due to the lack of skilled labour. While office jobs face disruption from automation, trades like plumbing and electrical work cannot easily be replaced by AI.

However, commenters also flagged the trade-offs associated with blue-collar work, including physical demands, injury risks, and the need for presence and performance. Others contextualised the plumber's earnings within Mumbai's unique housing market, where large gated communities outsource essential services and prefer long-term contractors over rotating staff.

The post has struck a chord with many readers, who are forced to confront the contrast between their own careers and the earning potential of skilled blue-collar workers.
