Lawmaker Mahesh Jethmalani Criticizes Mamata Banerjee for Refusing to Step Down After Bengal Election Loss
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Faces Intensified Calls for Dismissal
The demand for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's dismissal has intensified following remarks made by senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani. Jethmalani stated that Mamata's conduct poses a significant challenge to the entire democratic system.
According to Jethmalani, once an election is certified by the Election Commission, the Chief Minister is no longer in office. He emphasized that Mamata Banerjee's refusal to step down is an unacceptable behavior, warranting her dismissal. Jethmalani suggested that the Governor must formally dismiss her due to her insistence on remaining in office.
Jethmalani further stated that if Mamata Banerjee continues to occupy the Chief Minister's office, the Governor could intervene by directing the police to evict her. He labeled Mamata as a trespasser in the office, citing that the moment the election is certified, she is no longer lawfully occupying the position.

Mamata Banerjee, who lost the state to the BJP after three consecutive terms in power, has refused to step down from her post. She claimed that she has not lost the election and would not go to the Raj Bhavan to tender her resignation. The TMC supremo alleged that the BJP's victory was a result of large-scale irregularities in the counting process.
BJP won a spectacular 207 seats in the assembly polls, ending TMC's 15-year rule in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee addressed a press conference in Kolkata, alleging that the mandate in nearly 100 seats was "looted" and that the counting was deliberately slowed to demoralise her party.
