Google Expands Gemma 4 Family with New 12B Model

Google has introduced Gemma 4 12B, a new open-weight artificial intelligence model designed to run locally on laptops with as little as 16 GB of RAM. The model can handle text, images, and audio, delivering reasoning performance close to its larger Gemma 4 26B model. This makes advanced AI capabilities more accessible to developers, researchers, and businesses using consumer hardware.

The release expands Google's Gemma 4 family, which was introduced earlier this year as a collection of open models built from the same research foundation as its Gemini systems. The new 12-billion-parameter model fills the gap between lightweight edge models and larger workstation-class versions, offering a balance of performance and efficiency.

A key feature of Gemma 4 12B is its unified, encoder-free architecture. This allows visual and audio inputs to be integrated directly into the model, reducing memory use and lowering response times. The model is also equipped with Multi-Token Prediction drafters, a technique designed to speed up text generation by predicting multiple future tokens at once. This improves inference speed and makes local AI applications more responsive on everyday devices.

Gemma 4 12B supports a wide range of tasks, including coding assistance, speech recognition, video understanding, and agent-based workflows. Developers can run the model locally, reducing reliance on cloud infrastructure and helping organisations keep sensitive data on their own machines.

Key features of Gemma 4 12B include:

FeatureDescription
Context LengthUp to 256,000 tokens
Supported LanguagesOver 140 languages
Supported TasksCoding assistance, speech recognition, video understanding, agent-based workflows
Model AvailabilityPre-trained and instruction-tuned versions available

The release is designed to bring advanced AI capabilities to devices with 16 GB of RAM. By supporting text, image, and audio inputs on consumer hardware, Gemma 4 12B gives developers the option to run multimodal AI workloads locally instead of relying entirely on cloud-based systems.

Investor Takeaway

Google's release of Gemma 4 12B may lead to increased adoption of AI capabilities in consumer hardware, benefiting developers and businesses.
