Microsoft Unveils AI-Powered Project Solara at Build 2026 Developer Conference

Microsoft has unveiled Project Solara, a new Android-based software platform designed to enable AI assistants to perform tasks across multiple services, allowing users to complete actions without moving between different applications. The platform, showcased at the company's Build 2026 developer conference, reflects Microsoft's vision of a future where AI plays a central role in how people interact with technology.

Project Solara has been developed specifically for smaller connected devices and is built on Android's open-source foundation. The platform is intended to support lightweight hardware while remaining continuously connected to Microsoft's AI services. The company has also included security and device management tools aimed at business users.

As part of the announcement, Microsoft showcased two prototype devices powered by Project Solara. The first is a wearable badge equipped with a camera and fingerprint scanner, designed for use while travelling or working on the move. The second is a smart desk display intended for offices, providing quick access to schedules, information and AI-powered assistance. Both devices are concept models created to demonstrate the technology and are not currently intended for sale.

Project Solara is designed to move beyond the traditional app-based model. Instead of opening separate applications for different tasks, users would interact with AI assistants through voice, touch or visual commands, with the software handling actions and retrieving information across multiple services in the background. Microsoft refers to this approach as the next major platform shift in computing, comparable to earlier transitions from desktop computers to smartphones.

The announcement comes as competition intensifies in the race to develop AI-powered hardware. Technology companies including Google, Meta and OpenAI are exploring devices designed around artificial intelligence, creating what many analysts see as the next battleground in consumer and enterprise technology.

Microsoft has announced that several organisations, including AccuWeather, Best Buy, CVS Health and Target, are expected to begin pilot programmes using Project Solara technology. While the platform remains in its early stages, the company hopes it will help establish a new category of devices where AI agents, rather than apps, become the centre of the user experience.
