Friendship Turns to Fortune: Rs 1.4 Crore Investment Yields Multi-Millionaire Status
From Childhood Friendship to Multimillion-Dollar Business: The Story of Eggmazing
A childhood friendship and a risky loan of $150,000 (around Rs 1.4 crore) have turned into a multimillion-dollar business after a simple toy idea went viral and grew into a company generating more than $15 million in annual revenue.
Curtis McGill, a friend and financier of the company, lent Scott Houdashell Rs 1.4 crore in 2015, drawing from his children's college savings at the time. The funds were used to develop and manufacture the first batch of Eggmazing Egg Decorators, a device that spins eggs so children can decorate them using markers instead of dyes.
The risk paid off almost immediately. The first run of 10,000 units sold out in just 23 days, generating about Rs 1.4 crore in revenue. From prototype to viral product, Houdashell said the idea came while watching children lose interest halfway through traditional egg dyeing, leaving adults to clean up the mess. He built the first prototype using a hot glue stick and an electric screwdriver.

The two friends formally launched the company under the name Hey Buddy Hey Pal, a nod to how they greet each other, and gradually scaled operations while reinvesting profits. Eggmazing gained attention after appearing on Shark Tank in 2018, where the founders struck a deal with Lori Greiner. Following the appearance, sales surged and the company now generates more than $15 million annually.
From debt to millionaires, both McGill and Houdashell are now millionaires, with McGill noting that the loan — once a source of intense anxiety — has since been repaid many times over. The loan, which was taken from a college fund, has turned out to be a turning point in their lives.
