Friends Cast Continues to Garner Significant Annual Earnings Two Decades After Series Conclusion
Friends Cast Still Earning Staggering Residuals 20 Years After Show Ended
The financial success of the iconic sitcom Friends continues to amaze two decades after its final episode aired in 2004. According to actress Lisa Kudrow, the six lead cast members still earn a staggering $20 million each every year in residuals. This income comes from syndication, reruns, and global streaming deals, as revealed in a recent interview with The Times of London.
Friends, which ran from 1994 to 2004, remains one of the most-watched sitcoms in television history. The show's popularity can be attributed to its relatable characters and the chemistry among its lead cast members. During its original run, the cast negotiated a deal that started at $22,500 per episode in season one, eventually securing $1 million per episode each for the final two seasons. This deal also included a share of the show's backend profits, which is widely credited for the massive residual payouts still being earned today.
The residual income from Friends has become a significant source of wealth for its cast members. In comparison to their original salaries, the cast members are earning significantly more, with a 890% increase from their season one salaries.

Kudrow, who played Phoebe Buffay across all 10 seasons, has credited the show's lasting appeal to its capture of "a kind of innocence that maybe a younger generation has never experienced." She also attributed the show's popularity to the quality of the writing and the chemistry among the cast members. Reflecting on the show's impact, Kudrow stated that the cast members will never experience something like that again, making the show's residual income a unique and valuable asset.
In a separate interview, Kudrow also spoke about the behind-the-scenes environment of the show, revealing that the mostly male writers sometimes engaged in "mean" behavior, including berating actors over lines in front of a live audience. However, despite these controversies, Friends continues to be a financial juggernaut, underscoring how a single television show can generate wealth for decades.
As Kudrow put it, somewhat jokingly, when asked why the money keeps coming: because Friends was simply "that good."
