Danish Prime Minister Sparks Debate Over Children's Social Media Use

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has ignited a heated discussion about the risks social media poses to children and the need for greater parental supervision in the digital age. Speaking about online safety, Frederiksen made a striking comparison, stating that if she had small children today, she would rather have them smoking than allowing them to stay on their own on social media.

Frederiksen's remarks have reignited concerns about the impact of social media on children's well-being and the potential need for stricter regulations. Her comments come as Denmark moves towards banning social media use for children under 15, a proposal announced by the Prime Minister during the opening of the Danish Parliament on October 7, 2025.

The proposed ban would allow children aged 13 and 14 to access social media only with parental permission. The plan could take effect as early as next year, marking a significant shift in Denmark's approach to regulating children's online activity. Frederiksen emphasized the need for greater oversight, stating that social media platforms have "never had their wellbeing in mind" and that children's digital lives should be protected from exploitation.

Frederiksen's comments have been met with both support and criticism, with some arguing that social media can be a valuable tool for learning and self-expression. However, the Prime Minister's concerns about the potential risks of social media use are shared by many, and the proposed ban marks an important step towards protecting children's online safety.
