China Selects Pakistani Astronauts for Upcoming Space Mission, Following India's 42-Year Head Start
China and Pakistan Sign Major Milestone in Space Cooperation
China has named two Pakistani astronauts, Muhammad Zeeshan Ali and Khurram Daud, who will train for a future mission to its Tiangong space station. This marks a significant milestone in China-Pakistan space cooperation and represents Pakistan's first human spaceflight.
According to China's Manned Space Agency, Ali and Daud have been selected following assessments and will travel to China for training. One of them is expected to fly as a payload specialist alongside Chinese crew members, becoming the first foreign astronaut to enter China's Tiangong space station. The Tiangong space station was completed in 2022.
The move follows a bilateral agreement signed by China and Pakistan last year, allowing Pakistani astronauts to participate in China's manned space missions. Chinese state media described the selection as a "landmark achievement" and said it reflected Beijing's willingness to share the fruits of its space programme with partner countries.

Announcement Divides Social Media
The announcement sparked a mixed reaction on Indian and Pakistani social media, with many users putting the development in historical context. Several Indian users pointed out that India sent its first astronaut, Rakesh Sharma, to space in April 1984 aboard a Soviet mission - 42 years earlier. This framing was echoed by comments such as "Pakistanis are 42 years behind India."
Some comments were sharper, criticizing Pakistan's domestic challenges and the country's reliance on Chinese patronage. Others mocked the achievement as a by-product of Chinese support rather than indigenous capability. On the other side of the border, reactions were more celebratory, but not uniformly supportive.
