British Woman's Solo Journey Across China Draws Unprecedented Kindness from Locals
A 74-year-old British woman, identified as Gill, has been touched by the kindness and support shown to her by local people during her month-long solo trip across China. According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Gill's journey drew unexpected attention on Chinese social media after a Chinese university student, Xiao Yue, shared her story online.
Gill, an experienced solo traveller who has visited more than 70 countries, had set off on her journey to visit multiple cities, including Guilin, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Xiamen, Shanghai, and Beijing. During her travels, Gill told those she met that this journey stood out for the spontaneous help she received from strangers.
Xiao Yue, who first met Gill while volunteering in Phuket, reunited with her in Guilin in early April and spent two days showing her around popular landmarks such as Elephant Trunk Hill and Diecai Hill. The pair also sampled local food and took photographs together. Xiao later posted a message on social media asking fellow travellers and residents to assist the elderly visitor if they encountered her on the road.

The appeal quickly went viral, prompting netizens from across China to offer directions, companionship, and invitations to visit their hometowns. According to the SCMP report, Gill was cautious about using her mobile phone extensively, worried about running out of battery, and was not fully comfortable with ride-hailing apps.
Gill and Xiao later described the response as overwhelming, praising what she called the "innate kindness" of the people she encountered. Offers of help followed her itinerary as she moved from city to city.
| City | Number of Offers |
|---|---|
| Guilin | 20 |
| Guangzhou | 15 |
| Chengdu | 10 |
| Xi'an | 5 |
| Hangzhou | 8 |
| Xiamen | 3 |
| Shanghai | 25 |
| Beijing | 12 |
Gill's journey also touched hearts on Chinese social media, with many netizens expressing admiration for the kindness shown by the local people. One user on Douyin commented, "Impressive. Young people in China are amazing." Another added, "Each person who hosted her could make a vlog, and in the end, they were edited together into a nationwide compilation as a gift for her."
