Divaa Uthkarsha: A 17-Year-Old's Quest for Healthcare Equity

Divaa Uthkarsha, a 17-year-old from Bengaluru, has made history by becoming the youngest honouree in the Social Impact category of the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list. This global recognition is a testament to her tireless efforts in improving access to healthcare for children with Type 1 diabetes.

Divaa, a Class 12 graduate, founded Project Surya at the age of 13 after her younger brother was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The youth-led non-profit focuses on improving awareness, access, and affordability of treatment for underprivileged children living with the condition. Since its launch in 2021, Project Surya has grown into one of India's largest youth-led initiatives in this space.

Project Surya has made significant strides in providing essential supplies such as insulin, glucose strips, and syringes to families unable to afford treatment. The initiative has also trained thousands of ASHA workers and conducted outreach in numerous villages.

Beyond Forbes, Divaa's work has earned her multiple international honours, including the Diana Award and recognition from global platforms focused on youth and sustainability. She has spoken at the United Nations Headquarters, worked with organisations such as UN Women, and contributed to global policy discussions, including the G20 Youth (Y20) task force.

Divaa's inclusion in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list highlights a growing trend of young social entrepreneurs from India gaining global recognition for addressing systemic challenges—particularly in healthcare access. Type 1 diabetes remains a high-cost condition in India, with studies suggesting families often spend a significant share of their income on treatment, while many lack insurance coverage. By focusing on awareness and affordability, initiatives like Project Surya aim to bridge gaps in early diagnosis and sustained care.
