Concerns Over Excessive Screen Time Raise Questions About Children's Cognitive Development

Billionaire entrepreneur and Zerodha co-founder Nitin Kamath has sounded the alarm on the potential long-term effects of excessive digital device exposure on children's behavior and cognitive development. While screens can be a useful tool for managing time and keeping children engaged, Kamath warns that they may be fostering a culture of dependency.

According to a video shared by Kamath, cognitive neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath highlights a concerning trend among younger generations. Despite spending more time in formal education, today's children may be falling behind in key areas such as attention span, literacy, memory, numeracy, and executive function. This shift in learning abilities is a pressing concern that warrants attention from parents and educators.

Kamath's own parenting choices have led him to reflect on the impact of screen time on his son's development. His son studies in a school where digital devices are not permitted, and at home, screen time is capped at 30 minutes a day. However, Kamath notes that even with these restrictions, children quickly gravitate toward short-form content.

The issue extends beyond screen time duration, with many parents acknowledging that the design of apps and the social shift toward nuclear families have created an environment where screens have become a convenient support mechanism. One user pointed out that apps are engineered to capture and hold attention, making it difficult to control the pull of reels and clips.

A more nuanced view is that the problem lies not in the devices themselves, but in how they are used. Productive engagement that encourages critical thinking may be beneficial, but passive consumption of addictive short-form content is where concerns arise. As the conversation continues, parents are being encouraged to reconsider their approach to screen time and prioritize more balanced and engaged learning experiences for their children.
