Wockhardt Prepares for High-Stakes US Launch of Breakthrough Antibiotic Zaynich

Wockhardt, a leading Indian pharmaceutical company, is gearing up for a crucial US launch of its innovative antibiotic Zaynich, a move that could propel the company into the ranks of global innovators. At the helm of this ambitious endeavor is Zahabiya Khorakiwala, the daughter of Wockhardt's founder and chairman Habil Khorakiwala, who has taken a hands-on role in shaping the strategy.

The planned rollout of Zaynich over the next six to eight months is pivotal to Wockhardt's goal of transitioning from a generics-focused player to a global innovator and unlocking the pricing power and credibility that the US market commands. To achieve this, Zahabiya has immersed herself in the science behind Zaynich and the intricacies of the US healthcare system, meeting with hospital systems and customers to formulate a strategic approach.

Zaynich, developed by Wockhardt, received USFDA approval on May 30, and India a day prior. The novel intravenous antibiotic is designed to treat adults with complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs), including kidney infections caused by difficult-to-treat Gram-negative bacteria.

The US market, although rewarding, presents a challenging environment for pharmaceutical companies. Physician scrutiny is intense, reimbursement pathways are complex, and competition is fierce. Despite these obstacles, Wockhardt is optimistic about the prospects of Zaynich, projecting peak sales of between $1.5 billion and $2 billion per annum, with approximately 40 percent of that revenue expected to come from the US market alone.

The company anticipates that it will take at least 18-24 months for sales to gain momentum, during which time expenses may rise due to the establishment of commercial infrastructure. However, Habil Khorakiwala is confident in the drug's potential, likening the sales curve to a "hockey stick." With patent exclusivity in the US until 2038, Wockhardt has a significant window of opportunity to fully monetize Zaynich.

The US market presents a substantial opportunity for Zaynich, with nearly 1.2 million Gram-negative hospital infections annually, including approximately 600,000 cases in the complicated urinary tract infection (CUTI) segment. The growing threat of antimicrobial resistance has created a pressing need for new therapies that can outperform legacy antibiotics, many of which fail in up to 40 percent of severe empirical treatments.

Wockhardt's US strategy for Zaynich is centered around a tightly integrated three-pronged approach: targeted hospital penetration, physician-led adoption, and strong market access backed by economic proof. The company will focus first on high-resistance centers and large hospital systems, where the unmet need is greatest and adoption can scale quickly.

To build clinical confidence, Wockhardt will employ medical science liaisons, peer engagement, and real-world evidence rather than traditional marketing. The company will also make a clear economic case to hospitals by demonstrating how Zaynich can reduce length of stay and readmissions – key levers for cost savings. This will be achieved through a deliberately lean operating model, where external partners handle logistics and distribution, but strategic control and execution remain firmly with Wockhardt's in-house leadership.

To execute this strategy, Wockhardt has assembled an experienced US leadership team, led by Chief Commercial Officer William McNay, a pharma veteran with over 25 years of experience. The team also includes Dr. Dennis Durelle as Chief Medical Officer, Leo Ustinsky as Vice President for Market Access, and Sandy Estrada, who leads field medical affairs and physician engagement.
