Warren Buffett Faces Possible Halt to Gates Foundation Donations Amid Epstein Controversy
Warren Buffett's Relationship with Bill Gates Under Scrutiny Amid Epstein Scandal
Fresh disclosures linked to Jeffrey Epstein and his network have put pressure on the long-standing relationship between Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, CNBC reported, potentially impacting Buffett's future donations to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
During an extended appearance on CNBC's "Squawk Box," Buffett discussed the issue, stating that he has not spoken to Gates since the Epstein scandal came to light. Buffett reflected on their relationship, saying that they had shared "great times," but added that continuing regular communication does not make sense "until it gets cleared up."
Buffett acknowledged concerns about being drawn into detailed scrutiny, saying he would prefer not to be placed in a position of recalling decades of the foundation's activities under oath. He emphasized that his role was limited to funding, stating he had no involvement beyond contributing money.

On the question of continuing financial support, Buffett indicated no immediate decision has been made, stating that he would "wait and see what unfolds." He admitted that recent developments had revealed information he was previously unaware of.
At the same time, Buffett clarified that he does not believe Gates was involved in any wrongdoing related to Epstein's activities, including allegations tied to women or Epstein's private island. However, he stressed the need to better understand the situation as more details emerge.
Buffett expressed relief that he never had direct contact with Epstein, describing him as a manipulative figure who exploited vulnerabilities. He added that such behavior does not absolve those who engaged with him.

Buffett's long-standing philanthropic commitment has been highlighted. In 2006, he pledged to donate Berkshire Hathaway shares annually to the Gates Foundation during his lifetime, subject to certain conditions, including active involvement by Gates or Melinda French Gates and continued charitable deployment of funds. His will was originally structured to extend that commitment beyond his lifetime.
However, Buffett has since confirmed that the Gates Foundation will not receive funds after his death, with his three children now set to oversee the distribution of the bulk of his fortune.
Berkshire Hathaway's Apple Inc. Stake
Separately, CNBC reported that Buffett acknowledged trimming Berkshire's large stake in Apple Inc. earlier than ideal. The holding had been reduced by about 75% from its peak levels by December-end, despite the investment overall remaining highly successful.
Despite stepping down as CEO, Buffett continues to be actively involved as chairman, attending the office daily and participating in investment decisions. He has deferred to successor Greg Abel on final calls.
