Vodafone Idea Awards Ericsson Contracts for Postpaid Services and Network Expansion
Vodafone Idea Awards Expanded Mandate to Ericsson for Network Modernization
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has awarded a fresh mandate to Ericsson to modernize its postpaid business and deepen its network expansion in India.
Ericsson, which already powers Vi's charging platform for its prepaid segment, will now extend its footprint into the operator's postpaid segment. This will make Ericsson a pan-India supplier of online charging solutions across both customer bases, leveraging its Ericsson Charging platform to replace Vi's legacy offline billing and rating systems.
The upgrade will enable real-time charging for voice, VoLTE, SMS, and data services across consumer and enterprise segments. The benefits of the upgrade include faster product launches, greater flexibility and scalability, and lower operating costs, preparing Vi's core for 5G Standalone architecture.
This move builds on Ericsson's earlier migration of hundreds of millions of Vi prepaid subscribers to its charging platform in 2023. Since 2024, Ericsson has rolled out new 4G and 5G sites for Vi, added capacity layers to existing towers, and deployed High-Performance Small Cell (HPSC) sites across 10 telecom circles.
Under the expanded mandate, Ericsson will continue deploying and integrating new sites, boosting capacity, and enhancing indoor coverage to support Vi's ongoing 4G and 5G expansion. Additionally, Vi will implement a suite of Ericsson Telco IT AI applications, including anomaly detection, order fallout prediction, capacity forecasting, and intelligent usage analytics, to strengthen platform reliability, improve customer experience, and drive operational efficiencies.
Investor Takeaway
Investors should be aware of the potential for improved operational efficiency and scalability for Vodafone Idea following the upgrade to Ericsson's charging platform.
