Dinshaw's Ice Cream Ad Featuring Vinod Kambli Sparks Mixed Reactions on Social Media

A recent advertisement released by ice cream brand Dinshaw's, featuring former India cricketer Vinod Kambli, has generated a wide range of responses on social media. The commercial marks Kambli's first appearance in a public campaign since a health-related episode last year.

The advertisement is set in a neighbourhood setting, with children playing cricket and ice cream forming a central visual element. The campaign is built around the idea that individuals who have received "a little less" in life deserve "a little more." This concept is represented in the product through an enlarged chocolate-filled tip on an ice cream cone.

Following its release, the advertisement began circulating widely online. While some viewers engaged with the campaign as a comeback appearance for the former cricketer, others focused on how his personal experiences were used within the narrative.

Vinod Kambli's life and career have been well-documented over several years. His early cricketing success was followed by multiple challenges, including health concerns, financial difficulties, allegations linked to the 1996 match-fixing episode, strained relationships with former teammates, accusations of domestic violence, and arrests in cases related to drunk driving.

The advertisement incorporates the idea of having received "less," which several viewers connected to these widely reported aspects of Kambli's life. Gunjan Gaba, creative lead at TheWomb, the agency associated with the campaign, addressed the response to the advertisement.

According to Gaba, the campaign was created with a positive intent. "All we know is that we approached this with all our heart, as an agency we always see the positive in people," he said. Speaking about working with Kambli, he said the experience influenced how the campaign was shaped.

Gaba also described Kambli as someone who continues to find satisfaction in personal aspects of life. Referring to their interaction, he said the former cricketer remains "someone who finds joy in simple things like his wife and family." That's where we saw the connection," he added.

As the video circulated online, social media users had very divided reactions. While some users were not very impressed with Kambli's life story being presented like that, others were moved. The advertisement has sparked a conversation about the use of personal experiences in advertising and the ethics of exploiting a public figure's circumstances for commercial gain.
