US-Iran Conflict Escalation Raises Concerns for India's International Travel Industry
Global Aviation Disruption Looms as US, Israel, and Iran Conflict Escalates
The ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran poses a significant threat to India's aviation industry, with nearly half of the country's international departures to Gulf destinations. 14.6 million passengers departed to West Asian countries in 2024, accounting for 47% of India's total outbound international traffic of 30.9 million departures.
UAE, the largest market, accounted for 7.79 million departures, followed by Saudi Arabia with 3.42 million. Other Gulf hubs, including Qatar, Kuwait, and Oman, also play a critical role in India's aviation connectivity, handling 1.14 million, 0.89 million, and 0.88 million passengers, respectively.
The dependence on West Asian air corridors has increased significantly since the pandemic, with total departures rising from 12.8 million in 2019 to 14.6 million in 2024. This trend highlights India's exposure to geopolitical risks in the region, which may lead to longer flying times, higher fuel costs, and scheduling disruptions for airlines.

For passengers, the consequences of airspace closures and scheduling disruptions may include fare volatility, delays, and reduced connectivity, particularly on routes heavily reliant on Gulf hubs for onward travel. The continued instability in the region poses a significant threat to India's aviation industry, underscoring the need for contingency planning to mitigate the impact of potential disruptions.
Investor Takeaway
Investors should be cautious of potential disruptions in India's aviation industry due to the escalating conflict.
