A 36-year-old American man, Braden Cray, living in Shenzhen, China, has shared details of his family's monthly expenses, highlighting the relatively low cost of living in the city. Cray, who resides in Shenzhen with his wife and two children, has found everyday life in China to be more affordable and convenient compared to his experience in the United States.
Cray's family lives in a three-bedroom apartment in Shenzhen, paying approximately $1,000 per month (Rs 83,000) in rent. Their additional monthly expenses include electricity at around $100 (Rs 8,300) and Wi-Fi costing $29 (Rs 2,400). The apartment is equipped with a biometric entry system, allowing access without keys, providing a convenient and secure living experience.
Grocery expenses for Cray's family are approximately $100 a month (Rs 8,300), with individual items such as a whole chicken costing around $5 (Rs 415), a crate of eggs priced at $2.50 (Rs 200), and a packet of nuts costing roughly $2 (Rs 165). Payments in stores can be made through hand-scan technology, eliminating the need for a wallet or phone.

Public transport costs are also relatively low, with Cray's family spending around $50 per month (Rs 4,100) on transportation. Individual journeys can cost as little as 30 cents (approximately Rs 25). Healthcare expenses for the entire family are approximately $90 per month (Rs 7,500), while school fees for his children are around $300 per semester (Rs 25,000), including meals.
Cray initially worked as a teacher in China, earning approximately $4,000 per month (Rs 3.3 lakh). He later moved into a marketing manager role, where he now earns $3,500 (Rs 2.9 lakh) monthly. In addition, he makes around $1,000 (Rs 83,000) through social media platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, taking his total monthly income to around $4,500 (approximately Rs 3.7 lakh).
