Protecting Consumers: The Importance of Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) Code in Gold Jewellery

Buying gold jewellery is often touted as a safe investment, but many buyers overlook the significance of the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code. Despite the presence of a hallmark stamp, verifying the HUID number is equally crucial to ensure the gold is genuine.

Since the introduction of HUID on July 1, 2021, hallmark stamps now include three marks: The BIS logo, the assay's purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID number. Currently, in India, only gold and silver are subject to Hallmarking requirements.

The HUID code is a six-digit alphanumeric code introduced under the BIS hallmarking system to make gold purchases more transparent. While the hallmark confirms purity, the HUID helps identify and trace each piece through official records. Checking the HUID provides an extra layer of comfort around its authenticity and the testing process, which is essential in today's more organized gold market.

A hallmark alone may not be enough, as counterfeit hallmark stamps have been found in the market. Unscrupulous jewellers can copy or misuse hallmark symbols, making it difficult for ordinary buyers to identify genuine products. The HUID system adds an extra layer of security because each code is digitally recorded in the BIS database.

To verify the HUID, customers can use the official BIS Care mobile app or visit the BIS official website. By entering the code, buyers can check details such as the gold's purity, the jeweller's registration, and the hallmarking centre that certified the jewellery.

The government made HUID-based hallmarking mandatory to protect consumers from fraud and improve trust in the gold market. Checking the HUID may take only a few minutes, but it can prevent buyers from major losses later.

Purchasing hallmarked jewellery with a valid HUID helps protect buyers from fake or uncertified gold. It can also prove useful later if the jewellery is pledged for a gold loan. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to verify a gold jewellery HUID code:

StepDescription
1Check the hallmark stamp on the gold jewellery for the BIS logo, assay's purity, and HUID number
2Download the BIS Care mobile app or visit the BIS official website
3Enter the HUID number on the app or website
4Verify the details such as gold purity, jeweller's registration, and hallmarking centre

This quick verification method strengthens trust in the hallmarking system by promoting transparency, authenticity, and buyer confidence.
