Thalapathy Vijay's Success Paves the Way for TVK's Political Rise
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Appointed: Thalapathy Vijay Sworn in as State Leader
In a historic move, Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar appointed Thalapathy Vijay as the Chief Minister of the state on Saturday night. This decision was made after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief crossed the majority mark of 118 MLAs, including 108 of his own party, in the 234-member state assembly.
Vijay's father, expressing his happiness over the appointment, urged his son to "Do everything for Tamilians." He stated that he was doing everything for his son and that the Tamil people had finally succeeded through Vijay. This sentiment was echoed by Ponni, a friend of the family, who shared that they were very happy and supporting Vijay always.
The appointment was made possible after TVK secured the backing of several post-poll allies, including Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). With this support, TVK's tally has now reached 121 in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 118.

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, marking a significant shift in the state's political landscape. Once sworn in, Vijay will become the first leader outside the DMK and AIADMK formations to head the Tamil Nadu government since 1967.
Thalapathy's fans and TVK supporters rejoiced in excitement across Tamil Nadu, with many expressing their happiness and support for the new Chief Minister. A party supporter and fan shared that she had not eaten food since yesterday, eagerly waiting for Vijay to be appointed as the Chief Minister since May 4, when the results of the Tamil Nadu assembly polls were announced.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, with Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, expected to attend.
