Tata-SP Group Tensions Ease as Leaders Unite for Temple Ceremony
Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran will serve as the chief patron of the Mahakumbhabhishekam Core Committee of Mumbai's Sri Sankara Mattham, a temple dedicated to Adi Sankaracharya. The committee is led by Shapoor Mistry, chair of SP Group, brother of the late Cyrus Mistry, who was ousted as Tata Sons chairman in 2016.
The Mahakumbhabhishekam ceremony, held once every 12 years, will take place from 2nd April to 8th April. The consecration of the temple will be conducted by the Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam to "rejuvenate and re-energize the temple and enhance its spiritual powers." SP Group owns 18.37% of Tata Sons.
Tata Trusts executive noted that the joint committee is a surprise development given the tense relationship between the two groups. Discussions between the groups have been ongoing, with Tata Trusts directing Tata Sons to explore options to ensure the holding company remains private and provide an exit to the SP Group. In July 2025, Tata Trusts requested Tata Sons to continue discussions with the SP Group for an exit.
