Maya Tata Considers Exit from Tata Digital Amid Restructuring
Tata Digital, the e-commerce arm of the Tata Group, is facing significant restructuring, which may lead to a departure from the company for Maya Tata, the daughter of Noel Tata, the chairman of Tata Trusts.
According to a report by The Times of India, Maya Tata, 37, is evaluating opportunities across multiple Tata Group companies, with Trent emerging as her preferred option. Maya has been associated with Tata Digital since its inception and has been a key figure in the company's growth.
The development comes at a time when Tata Digital is facing increased scrutiny from Noel Tata, who has expressed concerns over losses at the business. The company has received significant investment from Tata Sons, with over Rs 24,000 crore being invested in Tata Digital, which houses businesses such as BigBasket, Tata Neu, Croma, and Tata 1mg.
As part of the ongoing restructuring, Tata Neu's workforce has been reduced by more than half, according to The Times of India report.
If Maya joins Trent, she would become the second of Noel Tata's three children to work at the company. Her brother Neville is already associated with Trent and oversees the Star Bazaar retail chain, while Noel Tata serves as chairman of the company.
Maya's sister Leah, 40, is with Indian Hotels Company, which operates the Taj hotel chain. Unlike Neville and Leah, who have remained with a single Tata Group company since joining, Maya has worked across different businesses, starting her career at Tata Capital before moving to Tata Digital.
The report added that all three siblings serve on the boards of smaller entities within Tata Trusts, the principal shareholder of Tata Sons. Neville also holds a board position at Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, one of the group's two key charitable trusts.
