Snake Farming Success Story: Chinese Woman Earns $147,000 a Year Raising 60,000 Venomous Snakes

A Chinese woman has made headlines after revealing her lucrative snake farming business, which generates over 1 million yuan (approximately $147,000) a year. Oin, born in 1995 in Guilin, Guangxi, returned to her hometown two years after university to assist her father in the snake farming industry.

According to reports, Oin manages a substantial reptile collection, comprising over 60,000 snakes, including more than 50,000 highly venomous five-step snakes and nearly 10,000 cobras. Her father initially opposed her entry into the industry, citing concerns over safety risks. However, as the farm expanded and the workload increased, Oin eventually joined her father to support the business.

The five-step snakes, a highly venomous species of pit viper, are force-fed prepared food, and close contact with them still carries significant risks. However, Oin, who has been exposed to snakes since childhood, is not afraid of the reptiles. She explained that dried snake, snake gallbladders, and snake oil are used in traditional medicine, while extracted venom is used in medical research.

Venom from the five-step snakes is sold at 40 and 200 yuan (approximately $6 and $30) per gram, depending on its quality. Snake meat sells for between 200 and 300 yuan per gram, while larger snakes fetch more than 1,000 yuan (approximately $150). After covering labour and other costs, the business earns over 1 million yuan a year.

Oin shares her experiences and practical knowledge of snake breeding online under the name "The Girl Who Collects Snake Venom," where she has over 22,000 followers. Her videos address common questions and provide insights into the world of snake farming, including the pain of snakebites and the risks associated with handling venomous snakes.
