Skims Co-Founder Warns Working from Home Can Be Career Detrimental, Citing Decline in Birth and Marriage Rates
Remote Work Culture Under Fire: Emma Grede Weighs in on its Downsides
Emma Grede, one of the key architects behind Kim Kardashian's billion-dollar shapewear brand Skims, has sparked controversy by labeling work-from-home culture as "career suicide." Grede, who also leads denim brand Good American and has appeared on Shark Tank, argues that the negative consequences of remote work are being ignored and may be contributing to broader social problems.
Speaking on the Leaders with Francine Lacqua podcast, Grede emphasized that the costs of remote work extend far beyond missed promotions and weaker networking opportunities. She questioned why remote work is rarely discussed in the context of social isolation, pointing to the alarming trends of declining birth rates, declining marriage rates, and the loneliness epidemic. Grede suggested that fewer in-person interactions may be reshaping how people form relationships, and that it is "so crazy" not to acknowledge this possibility.
Grede's comments are consistent with her earlier views on work culture. Last year, she stated that asking about work-life balance during job interviews is a "red flag," and that managing it is the individual's responsibility, not the employer's.

According to Grede, young professionals are particularly disadvantaged by remote work. She pointed to her own experience of doing unpaid internships despite financial strain, citing the value of in-person interactions and learning opportunities that remote setups cannot replicate. Grede described those early opportunities as a "huge unlock" that helped her understand how organisations really work.
| Company | Remote Work Policy | Effect on Early Careers |
|---|---|---|
| Skims | Flexible, remote work options | Limited opportunities for in-person interactions and learning |
| Good American | In-office work environment | Encourages visibility, networking, and learning opportunities |
| Average Company | Varies | May limit opportunities for in-person interactions and learning for young professionals |
Grede's stance on work culture has sparked debate, and her opinions are likely to resonate with those who value in-person interactions and networking opportunities.
