India Retailer Faces Backlash Over Kirpan Policy
A video circulating online has sparked a heated debate over the right of Sikhs to carry kirpans, ceremonial daggers worn as part of their faith, into private spaces. The incident occurred at a Zudio clothing outlet in Imphal, Manipur, where two men were asked by security staff and the manager to leave their kirpans outside the premises.
According to the video, the men refused to comply, citing Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, which grants Indians the right to practise their religion. The men argued that carrying a kirpan is an essential part of their faith and that the store was not enforcing the law. However, private spaces and certain public areas may place restrictions on weapons for safety reasons.
The incident has sparked a range of responses online, with some users supporting the store's decision to restrict kirpans for safety reasons. One user noted that even if carrying a kirpan is legal in India, a store has the right to set its own rules for safety. Others acknowledged that public safety should come first and that rules inside stores exist for the protection of everyone.
