Rise and Decline of Food Festival Celebrities: Social Media's Impact on Culinary Fame
South Beach Wine & Food Festival Celebrates 25 Years Amid Shift in Food Festival Landscape
The South Beach Wine & Food Festival, one of the pioneers of the food festival circuit, marked its 25th anniversary last weekend. The festival, which has raised over $45 million for the Florida International University Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, continues to thrive, with nearly all of its 110 events selling out this year.
However, the festival scene has undergone significant changes in recent years. The rise of social media has led to a decline in the popularity of large, generic food festivals, with many smaller, hyper-focused events gaining traction. These events, such as the AAPI Food & Wine festival, which highlights the work of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, focus on showcasing local cuisine and culture.
According to Mike Thelin, one of the founders of the now-shuttered Oregon festival Feast Portland, the shift in the food festival landscape is driven by the changing needs of the industry. "In 2010, they wanted to get on the map," Thelin said. "They don't need that anymore."
In contrast to the large, white-tent affairs that were once the norm, these smaller festivals offer a more intimate and authentic experience, allowing attendees to connect with local food producers, chefs, and artisans.
The South Beach Wine & Food Festival, however, remains a staple of the festival scene, with its blueprint continuing to be relevant today. Lee Schrager, the force behind the festival, notes that social media has made everyone available, but it can't replace the tangible experience of attending an event.
