Reliance's Battery Giga-Factory Nears Completion Amid Accelerating Green Energy Push
Reliance Industries Outlines Aggressive Expansion Roadmap for New Energy Business
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has outlined an ambitious expansion plan for its new energy business, detailing timelines for battery manufacturing, green hydrogen and ammonia production, and large-scale renewable power projects. The conglomerate is accelerating its push into clean energy and decarbonisation as part of its broader new energy strategy.
In its FY26 annual report, released on May 28, Reliance said its Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) giga-factory is in advanced stages of commissioning, with production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based batteries expected to ramp up during the second half of 2026. The facility will initially have an annual production capacity of 40 GWh, with a roadmap to eventually scale up to 100 GWh.
The battery project forms a central part of Reliance's broader new energy strategy anchored around its Jamnagar green energy complex, which the company has described as an integrated clean energy ecosystem spanning solar photovoltaics manufacturing, energy storage, and green fuels. The company is building "integrated capabilities across Solar PV manufacturing, energy storage, and green energy infrastructure" to help India achieve energy independence.

Reliance has been positioning the Jamnagar complex as one of the world's largest integrated renewable manufacturing ecosystems, as it seeks to build capabilities across the clean energy value chain. The company also provided fresh timelines for its green hydrogen and green ammonia business, which is expected to emerge as a major long-term export opportunity.
| Green Energy Product | Target Capacity | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Green Hydrogen | 3 MMTPA | 2032 |
| Green Ammonia | 15-year offtake agreement with Samsung C&T | Second half of FY29 |
Reliance said it is working towards 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of green hydrogen production capacity by 2032 for global markets. Supplies under its 15-year green ammonia offtake agreement with Samsung C&T are expected to commence in the second half of FY29. The deal is among the largest long-term green ammonia supply arrangements announced by an Indian company and signals Reliance's intent to build a global clean fuels export business.
Green hydrogen and green ammonia are increasingly being viewed as critical fuels for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as refining, chemicals, fertilisers, shipping, and heavy industry. Reliance is also rapidly scaling up its solar manufacturing and renewable energy footprints.

The company said its Jamnagar solar manufacturing complex is on track to scale up to 10 GWp per annum, with plans for further expansion to 20 GWp annually. Separately, Reliance said it plans to develop a 6 GWp solar power project in Andhra Pradesh, further expanding its renewable generation portfolio.
| Solar Energy Project | Location | Target Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Jamnagar Solar Manufacturing Complex | Jamnagar | 10-20 GWp per annum |
| Andhra Pradesh Solar Power Project | Andhra Pradesh | 6 GWp |
The company said solar power generation at the 550,000-acre Kutch renewable energy project is expected to commence in FY27. Electricity generated from the project will be used for captive consumption as well as production of green fuels. The Kutch project is expected to play a key role in supporting the company's green hydrogen ambitions by providing access to renewable energy at scale, which is critical for lowering hydrogen production costs.
Reliance said its broader clean energy investments are aimed at creating an integrated ecosystem that combines manufacturing, renewable power generation, storage, and fuel production.
Investor Takeaway
Reliance's aggressive expansion into clean energy and decarbonisation may have a positive impact on the company's stock price.
