Chinese Boy, 12, Defies Odds to Pursue Badminton Career Despite Severe Burn Injuries
In a heartwarming tale of determination and resilience, a 12-year-old boy from eastern China has captured the hearts of millions with his unwavering dedication to pursuing a career in badminton despite suffering severe burn injuries six years ago.
Xuanxuan, from Jinan in Shandong province, was just six years old when a devastating fire broke out in his family's small noodle shop, leaving him with burns across 97 percent of his body. His parents and younger sister were also injured, but Xuanxuan sustained the most extensive damage.
Since the accident, Xuanxuan has undergone more than 50 operations and continues to endure ongoing pain and repeated surgeries. However, his determination to pursue a career in badminton has never wavered.

Badminton Becomes Source of Motivation and Purpose
Xuanxuan's interest in badminton began after he encountered the sport by chance and became fascinated by the achievements of Chinese sporting icon Lin Dan. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Lin won 20 world championship titles during an illustrious career and remains one of China's most celebrated badminton figures.
Xuanxuan's admiration for Lin grew after watching footage of one of the champion's matches online, and he was particularly inspired by Lin's determination to keep fighting for every point until the contest was over.

Xuanxuan's story eventually reached Lin Dan himself, who recorded a video message for the young player and sent him badminton shoes and a jersey as gifts. The pair later met in person in May during a press event linked to the Lin Dan Cup Badminton Open in Jinan.
During the meeting, Lin presented Xuanxuan with a signed photograph and a personalized T-shirt, praising the youngster's resilience and describing him as a "little warrior." Lin also told Xuanxuan that in his eyes, his scars were the most special medals and that he believed there would be no difficulty he could not overcome in the future.
