Artificial Intelligence on the Brink of Replacing Most Human Jobs

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is expected to replace most human jobs within the next two to three years, according to Ben Goertzel, the father of AGI. Goertzel told Forbes that once a fully independent human-level AI is achieved, the vast majority of human jobs will become obsolete. However, he noted that this transition will not occur overnight, and there will be a period of time before AGI becomes widely adopted.

The Transition Period

Goertzel explained that the process of AGI becoming mainstream will be similar to how AI became widely accepted over the years. For instance, Gen AI in 2022 took some time for organizations to fully adopt and implement. The AI pioneer and computer scientist emphasized that there will be a transitional period before AGI is fully rolled out.

Jobs That Will Remain Intact

Ben Goertzel stated that certain roles, such as educators and teachers, will remain unaffected by AGI because a human touch is critical in these professions. He noted that these jobs will continue to be essential in the future of work.

AI-Proof Skills

As AI adoption rises, skills are changing rapidly, and it is difficult to predict which jobs will be replaced first. However, Goertzel identified three skills that workers will need to remain relevant in the future of work:

SkillDescription
1. Strong Human Relationship-BuildingEmotional intelligence, rapport-building, communication skills, and active listening are essential in building strong human connections.
2. Ability To PivotAdaptability and agility are crucial in today's workforce, requiring workers to learn new skills every month, stay up-to-date with industry news, and critically reflect on how it might impact their work.
3. Be Comfortable With YourselfEmbracing one's self, being fully present in the moment, and understanding oneself intimately are essential in connecting with others and being relevant in the future of work.

Preparing for the Future of Work

Goertzel emphasized that people who work in roles that can be performed by a computer smarter than them must be willing and ready to switch to a career where human touch and connection remain critical. He suggested that workers should focus on building skills that are AI-proof, such as those listed above, to remain relevant in the future of work. Ultimately, it is not a matter of "What jobs will stick around?" but "What kind of person you will become in this new era?"
