Internship at a Global Tech Company: A Long and Competitive Journey

In today's competitive job market, landing an internship at a global tech company is often seen as a major milestone. However, the journey to securing such an opportunity is often overlooked. Behind these opportunities lies a long process of preparation, experience building, and repeated applications that many candidates go through before getting selected.

A Pakistani woman working at Microsoft UK has shared her experience of securing a paid internship worth up to around £24,000 per year, approximately Rs 30 lakh. The conversation was shared by US-based Pakistani content creator Hamza Chishtie, who is also Director of Cloud & AI at Microsoft. In the video, he speaks with Aliza Uppal, a Pakistani professional currently interning at Microsoft in London.

Aliza explained that her internship is part of a structured 12-month placement programme linked to her university studies. She said she focused on gaining experience early on through multiple internships before applying. Prior to her current internship, Aliza had completed around four or five internships in different places. Her academic background in business analytics also helped her develop relevant skills for her current role.

In her present role, Aliza is involved in artificial intelligence-focused initiatives aimed at improving AI skills and awareness across the UK. She described her interview experience, which involved multiple rounds conducted back-to-back. Aliza's compensation varies depending on her role and location and falls within a defined range for her placement. The pay range is roughly around £18,000 to £24,000 per year, depending on the area.

Her experience has sparked mixed reactions online. Many users highlighted how competitive internships at companies like Microsoft have become, especially in the tech sector. Others focused on the salary in relation to London's high living costs, sparking a separate debate. Some users commented that the pay is not sufficient for the high cost of living in London, while others pointed out that the salary range is not unreasonable for a placement student.
