Pakistan Stock Market Plunges Amid Escalating Tensions with Afghanistan
Pakistan Stock Market Volatility Amid Escalating Pak-Afghan War Tensions
The Karachi 100 Index (KSE 100 Index) experienced sharp selling on Friday, opening with a downside gap and reaching an intraday low of 167,948. The index incurred an intraday loss of approximately 0.55% within a short period after the opening bell. However, value buying at lower levels helped the KSE 100 Index to pare some of its losses.
The volatility in the Pakistan stock market can be attributed to the escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Following cross-border attacks by Afghanistan, Pakistan carried out air strikes in Kabul and two other Afghan provinces, further intensifying geopolitical tensions in the region.
The ongoing Pak-Afghan war may significantly impact primary market sentiment, particularly as investors in Pakistan's stock market have been awaiting 16 IPOs over the past 7 months. Arif Habib Ltd. and Ktrade Securities Ltd., two prominent investment banks, have a combined pipeline of up to 16 IPOs over the next 7 months.

Market valuations are considered attractive for raising equity, with a stable Pakistani rupee and a favorable interest-rate environment providing strong tailwinds for capital markets. Notably, Arif Habib expects to bring as many as 8 offerings through June, while Ktrade Securities expects to manage public offerings for at least 6 companies over the next 6 months.
Companies in the pipeline include Service Long March Tyres Ltd., a joint venture between Servis Group and China's Chaoyang Long March, which plans to raise up to 6.5 billion Pakistani rupees ($23.2 million) by April, potentially making it the country's biggest IPO in years. Additionally, Saraaf, a commodity sourcing startup, and Matco Foods Ltd. are planning to come to market.
The escalation of violence between Pakistan and Afghanistan has raised concerns about the impact on the Pakistani economy and the stock market. The ongoing tensions may lead to a prolonged period of market volatility, affecting investor confidence and the overall performance of the Pakistan stock market.
Investor Takeaway
Investors should be cautious of potential market volatility due to geopolitical tensions.
