NTPC to Focus on 8 GW Renewable Energy Capacity Addition in FY27, Source Reveals
NTPC Plans to Add 8 GW of Renewable Energy Capacity in FY 2026-27
State-run power company NTPC Ltd aims to increase its renewable energy capacity by 8 gigawatts (GW) in the current fiscal year 2026-27 through its wholly owned subsidiary NTPC Green Energy. This addition will bring the total renewable energy capacity to over 18 GW, according to a senior official.
In the previous fiscal year, FY26, NTPC added 5.5 GW of renewable capacity across solar, wind, and Pumped Storage Projects (PSP). The company is also targeting the addition of 1.6 GW of thermal capacity during the fiscal year, of which it recently commissioned 800 megawatts (MW) of the Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited project. Another unit of the project, also 800 MW, is expected to be commissioned by February next year.
NTPC's thermal power capacity under construction stands at 16.5 GW, as the country reaffirms its dependence on coal-based capacity to meet the rising power demand. The company operates over 90 GW of installed capacity across the country and has a total of around 32 GW of generation capacity under construction. NTPC has set a target of achieving 149 GW total installed capacity by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable energy sources.

Along with renewable energy, NTPC is advancing steps to develop a Coal-to-Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) facility in collaboration with state-run Engineers India Limited. The company expects to come out with the detailed project report (DPR) for the facility this year. The proposed facility will utilize high ash Indian coal from NTPC's captive mines, converting it into SNG - a cleaner fuel alternative for the company's gas-based power stations as well as in-situ power generation. The project is expected to produce 0.5 million tonnes of SNG per annum.
NTPC plans to ramp up coal production from its captive mines to 290 million tonnes in 2026-27 against 280 million tonnes in FY26, the official noted. The company is also pushing forward its nuclear expansion with a proposed 2.8 gigawatts (GW) project in Bihar, at an estimated cost of Rs 56,000 crore. India aims to boost its nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047. The company's nuclear unit, NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam Ltd, will conduct a feasibility study for the proposed plant in the state's Banka district, with the study expected to be completed by October.
Investor Takeaway
NTPC plans to add 8 GW of renewable energy capacity in FY27, which may positively impact the company's growth and the overall energy sector.
