The political landscape in Bihar is set to undergo a significant shift as Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar, is expected to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha polls on Thursday. This move is seen as potentially setting the stage for a transition in leadership, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerging as a strong contender to lead the next government.
The BJP has 89 seats in the Assembly, making it the single largest party. According to sources, the party is likely to lead the next government, with the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) expected to receive two deputy chief minister positions as part of a power-sharing arrangement. Potential candidates for the top post include Samrat Choudhary, Vijay Kumar Sinha, Dilip Jaiswal, and Sanjiv Chaurasia from the BJP, and Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Nishant Kumar from the JD(U).
The union home minister, Amit Shah, is expected to visit Patna on Thursday, fuelling speculation that the ruling alliance is gearing up to formalise the leadership transition. Meanwhile, Nitish Kumar's son Nishant is set to enter politics, although his exact role remains undecided.
JD(U) insiders suggest that Nishant's entry into politics is a strategic move aimed at preventing the party from fragmenting once Nitish Kumar steps aside. Others see it as a departure from the party's long-held principle against dynastic politics.
