New Refund Rules for Indian Railways: What You Need to Know

Rajesh, a frequent train traveler, is planning to take a train from New Delhi to Lucknow on April 2. He has already booked a ticket for Rs 1,200 but is not happy with the side upper berth he has been allotted. In an attempt to secure a better seat, Rajesh plans to try his luck with a Tatkal ticket, which usually opens just a day before the train's scheduled departure and comes with higher fares.

Tatkal bookings typically involve a higher fare, with prices ranging from Rs 1,600 for a second AC coach, including an additional Rs 400 charge. If Rajesh books a Tatkal ticket on April 1 and then cancels his earlier ticket, he could end up losing a significant portion of the Rs 1,200 he paid for it.

From April 1, Indian Railways will introduce new refund rules, which tighten the refund window and increase penalties for last-minute changes. The closer you get to train departure, the more you lose.

Cancellation PeriodPercentage Deduction
Between 24 and 72 hours before departure25%
Between 8 and 24 hours before travel50%
Within 8 hours of departure100%

The new rules will impact travelers who often have to make last-minute changes, such as business travelers and families booking in advance but facing uncertain schedules. Tatkal users, who are frequent travelers and already pay higher fares, will also feel the impact of the new rules.

To minimize losses, smart passengers can cancel tickets as soon as plans change, even if they are not fully sure. Avoid booking multiple options unless necessary, and look for more flexible ticket choices where available. If travel platforms offer trip cancellation insurance in the future, it may be worth considering.
