Lufthansa Cabin Crew to Stage Strike on Friday: Causes and Impact on Flight Operations
Lufthansa Braces for Cabin Crew Strike as Easter Travel Plans Disrupted
Deutsche Lufthansa AG is preparing for a potential cabin crew strike at airports across Germany on Friday, 10 April, which could significantly impact travel plans for passengers returning after the Easter holidays. According to a statement issued by the labour union UFO, the strike is set to take place from 12:01 AM to 10 PM, affecting departures at multiple German airports, including Berlin and Hamburg.
The strike is the result of months of deadlocked negotiations over a new collective labour agreement between Lufthansa and the UFO union, which represents 19,000 cabin crew members working for the airline. The union has accused Lufthansa of failing to present a negotiable offer, while the airline maintains that cost reductions are necessary to manage its debt.
The dispute has been ongoing since February, when Lufthansa pilots staged a one-day strike over a disagreement concerning pension benefits. The pilots are demanding improved retirement benefits, while the airline maintains that cost reductions are necessary to manage its debt. In March, the pilots staged a two-day strike, with cabin crew from the CityLine also joining the February action.
The strike is also linked to a dispute over a social plan for employees at Lufthansa CityLine, which is set for closure. The union is seeking severance packages and protections for the 800 members working for CityLine.
| Airport | Departures Affected | Estimated Disruption |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurt | All departures | High |
| Munich | All departures | High |
| Berlin | Multiple departures | Medium |
| Hamburg | Multiple departures | Medium |
Lufthansa has already issued a revised flight schedule for the strike period and is taking steps to minimize disruption by deploying larger aircraft and increasing services through other airlines within its group. The airline has also called on the union to keep negotiations going, as the strike's timing is likely to affect passengers "particularly hard."
Deutsche Lufthansa AG has had a rocky start to the year, grappling with labour disputes and broader geopolitical tensions impacting air travel. Despite reporting an operating profit of €1.96 billion ($2.27 billion) in March, surpassing forecasts and rising about 20% compared with the previous year, the airline's shares fell by as much as 4.4% in Frankfurt trading on Thursday. The stock has declined by around 7% so far this year.
