IT Sector Adapting to Changing Demands Amid Shift to Remote Work: Nasscom Response to PM Modi's Initiative
India's Technology Industry Adapts to Fuel Conservation Efforts Amid Escalating West Asia Crisis
India's technology industry is continuing to rely on hybrid work models and distributed delivery frameworks as companies respond to the government's call for fuel conservation amid the escalating West Asia crisis. According to a statement from technology industry body Nasscom on May 11, tech firms are calibrating work-from-home and in-office arrangements based on "role requirements and customer needs", while also undertaking broader energy management measures across campuses.
The statement comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens and organisations to reduce fuel consumption through carpools, work from home, and avoiding unnecessary travel amid a growing energy crisis due to the US-Iran war, which is in its third month. Nasscom stated that companies have initiated measures such as optimising non-essential energy consumption, rationalising select facility services, and enabling remote or hybrid work "where operationally appropriate" to reduce commuting and overall energy usage.
These measures are not extraordinary interventions but part of the sector's existing operational resilience strategy. Nasscom noted that India's tech sector already has "well-established business continuity frameworks and distributed delivery models". The comments indicate that while a full-scale return to pandemic-era work-from-home arrangements is unlikely, companies are willing to lean more heavily on hybrid flexibility when required by operational or external conditions.
India's IT services industry has over the last two years stepped up office presence, with several large firms pushing employees to return to campuses at least three to five days a week. However, the sector has largely retained a hybrid structure for a significant portion of the workforce.
| Company | Pre-Pandemic Office Presence | Current Office Presence |
|---|---|---|
| IT Services Industry | 3-5 days a week | 3-5 days a week |
| Tech Firms | - | Varying, based on role requirements and customer needs |
Nasscom said it continues to monitor the evolving situation and remains engaged with industry stakeholders and government authorities to ensure a "coordinated and responsible response".
