IndiGo Suspends Flights to Manchester Amid Challenging Cost Environment

IndiGo, India's largest airline, has announced the temporary suspension of its flights to and from Manchester, United Kingdom, starting August 31, 2026. The decision was made due to an "unfavourable cost and operational environment" according to the airline's official statement.

Despite suspending its Manchester services, IndiGo will continue to operate all its other long-haul international flights as scheduled. The airline has also decided to return one of the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, taken on a damp or wet lease, to Norse Atlantic Airways.

The airline's decision to suspend Manchester flights is a result of the significant impact of prevailing industry-wide challenges, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs, severe airspace restrictions, and foreign exchange volatility. These factors have pushed operating costs well above original estimates.

Key Factors Behind the Decision

FactorImpact on IndiGo
Geopolitical tensions in the Middle EastSignificant
Rising ATF costsSignificant
Severe airspace restrictionsSignificant
Foreign exchange volatilitySignificant

The airline had damp-leased the six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners from Norse Atlantic Airways in early 2025 as part of its strategy to establish a foothold in the European market before commencing services with its own Airbus A350 aircraft. However, the airline was forced to take the decision to temporarily discontinue its India – Manchester services due to longer flying times caused by airspace constraints and dramatically escalating costs.

IndiGo will continue to operate all its remaining long-haul flights as planned, and the airline is exploring innovative solutions to continuing its collaboration with Norse Atlantic Airways.
