India Sees Surge in Diesel Exports Amid Global Market Shifts
India's diesel exports have experienced a significant increase in March, driven by widening margins between crude oil and refined fuels due to the ongoing Iran war. According to a report by The Economic Times, shipping data reveals that diesel exports rose by approximately 20% month-on-month to 12.9 million barrels during the period of March 1-28. This marks a substantial increase from the 10.74 million barrels exported in February.
The surge in diesel exports is a notable trend, especially when considering the overall decline in the country's total exports of refined petroleum products. According to ET, the total exports of refined petroleum products decreased by around 8% over the same period. This suggests that Indian refiners have adjusted their output mix to capitalize on better margins, prioritizing middle distillates such as diesel and jet fuel.
The geopolitical tensions in West Asia have significantly impacted the supply balances for diesel and jet fuel, pushing up their "crack spreads" (the difference between crude oil prices and the value of refined products) more sharply than for petrol. As a result, refiners have shifted their focus to produce more of these high-margin products, while crude prices have surged amid disruptions linked to the near closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
