Viral Video Raises over 400,000 Yuan for Sick Woman in China
A woman in China who suffered from a rare vascular condition has been overwhelmed with online support after a video of her spitting blood on a metro train went viral. Hu Xinyao, 23, has collected over 400,000 yuan (approximately Rs3.74 crore) in donations from people online who sympathized with her condition.
According to Jiupai News, the incident occurred on March 23 when Hu was on her way to the hospital to receive an injection for her condition, ANCA-associated vasculitis. Despite her worsening health, Hu quickly took off her coat to wipe the train floor, a selfless act that moved many on social media.
The video of the incident quickly went viral on mainland social media, with many users expressing their sympathy and admiration for Hu's bravery. Within a week, Hu had collected over 400,000 yuan in donations from people online, forcing her social media platform to temporarily ban her account due to the large number of fund transfers.

Hu's condition has been ongoing since 2018, when she first noticed a red spot on her body while in middle school. Despite her family's struggles to afford her medical expenses, Hu has worked hard to support herself, including working on an assembly line, selling orange juice on the roadside, and writing online novels in 2023, earning 5,000 to 6,000 yuan each month.
| Donations Collected | Time Frame |
|---|---|
| 400,000 yuan | Within 1 week of the video going viral |
Hu's family has spent nearly 1 million yuan (approximately US$145,000) on treatment, and last year she received over 20 critical illness notices from the hospital. Despite her challenges, Hu has shown remarkable resilience and determination, even gaining attention on social media in September after her ex-boyfriend Xiao died of acute pancreatitis and left her his savings of 50,000 yuan.
